Public engagement on this project has ended. Project updates will continue to be posted to this page.

Washington Jefferson Park is a 21-acre community park in Downtown Eugene bound by 1st and 7th Avenues on the north and south and by Washington and Jefferson streets to the east and west. The park is an urban setting in the heart of a multicultural neighborhood close to the Riverbank bike path system and bus routes. The park is roughly divided into four separate sections defined by street and railroad crossings through the site. 2.3 Acres within Section 3 between West 5th and 6th Avenues is now being considered for construction of a dog park.

As WJ Park reopens to the public after three years of COVID related closures and renovations, park programming has become ever more important in keeping the park safe and welcoming for all visitors. Some Whiteaker neighbors have expressed support for the idea of a dog park in the past.

Over the summer, we reached out to neighbors with a survey to assess broader public support for this idea. More than 200 community members took the survey and approximately 85% were in support of adding a dog park to the area.

What's next?

The planning team has completed both the design for the dog park as well as coordination of approvals with ODOT. Utility coordination and markings will occur prior to the new year and installation of the dog water station begins the first week of January in 2024. The remaining dog fence installation is expected to follow. Stay tuned for more updates in 2024 as construction progresses.

Dog Park Now Open

Eugene's newest dog park at Washington Jefferson Park opened to the public on March 20, 2024.

This 1.3 acre dog park is located between West 5th and 6th avenues with double entry gates, park benches, dog bag dispensers and garbage service. The hours of operation are 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Dog owners are invited to bring their fur friends to the dog park, where they can run leash-free within the gated facility.

  • CLOSED: This survey has concluded.

The City of Eugene is looking at the possibility of constructing a dog park for Washington Jefferson Park between 5th Street and 6th Ave. We are looking for input from people who live near the park, those who use the park, and people who care about the park. That’s you! What should change? What should stay the same? Your insights are important and will influence the design of this project.

This is the first of two public surveys, and we encourage you to participate in any or all of them.

The survey is scheduled for the following dates:

    1. Needs, Priorities and Vision (June 1 – June 14)

This survey will take less than 5 minutes to complete.

A print-friendly version is available by contacting mkosmos@eugene-or.gov. Encourage your family and neighbors to take the surveys!

Share your email at the end of this survey to receive updates. Your responses are anonymous and will not be associated with your email address.
