Public engagement on this project has ended. Project updates will continue to be posted to this page.

Based on these results and after further consultation with the Eugene-Springfield Fire Department (ESFD), we plan to install gates to allow for temporary closure.

Gate closures will occur:

  • when directed by ESFD to manage the park during extreme fire conditions,
  • if there is a critical need to manage illegal camping and park rules violations,
  • if there is a critical safety issue such as tree or slope failure,
  • when occasional special recreational events are permitted.

The City of Eugene Fire Marshal and Fire Chief support this action. Please read the statement from The Eugene Springfield Fire Marshal’s Office.

The Eugene-Springfield Fire Department has emergency fire response plans and will leave gates open during an evacuation event if the route is deemed safe.

Parking Signs

The Parks & Open Space Division plans to install 4-hour maximum parking signs at the parking pods along Fairmount and other parking areas in Hendricks Park to limit camping and illegitimate use.

No Permanent Closure

No permanent road closure is being considered. Gates will allow for temporary closure to improve community safety during emergencies and permitted special recreational events.

Gates will be installed at the two starred locations. Both locations allow for sufficient vehicle turnaround space.

  • CLOSED: This survey has concluded.

The survey will be open until July 31

Parks and Open Space is considering the installation of vehicular closure gates within Hendricks Park at each end of Fairmount Boulevard. Pedestrian and bicycle access would not be affected by the gates.

Take this short survey to let us know how a vehicular closure might affect access and activities in or through the park.
