Project Overview

Golden Gardens is a large, 223-acre public park in northwest Eugene on the northern edge of the Bethel neighborhood. Proposed amenities include sports fields, neighborhood park amenities, and habitat protections. The City of Eugene wants your input to help design the future park! The City will use community input to prepare a concept plan that will direct the park’s development within three primary spaces:

  • habitat conservation area with trails
  • sports complex with vehicle access from Clear Lake Drive
  • neighborhood park designed primarily for residents within a half mile of the park

This project aims to balance recreational facility development with habitat conservation as well as the considerations of the immediate neighborhood with the broader community’s recreation needs and economic development interests.

Sports Complex Market Study

This study analyzed the market, programmatic, financial, and economic feasibility of new multi-use sports facilities in Eugene and Springfield, Oregon. Phase One analyzed market demand and programmatic aspects. Phase Two analyzed location, operation, construction costs, economic impacts, and funding aspects. The study found that a high-quality baseball/softball and soccer/multi-sport facility with 16 fields is the greatest market need in the Eugene-Springfield area and that Golden Gardens Park is an “excellent/very good” site for the complex.

Habitat Conservation

The 2005 Interim Management Plan provides guidance to City staff on public access, recreation, and protection and enhancement of existing natural resource values for 36-acres surrounding the park's ponds and A-2 channel. The plan was developed prior to 2008 restoration efforts and park land acquisition and remains in effect until a new park master plan is developed. Note that General Site Strategies #4, related to dog training, and #5, related to BMX informal track, are currently not allowed in the park.

    The public input process has concluded but we are continuing to work on the project. The timeline is about 3 to 5 years between now and the start of construction of phase 1 of the park.  Currently, a triple bottom line analysis is being conducted before we make a final determination of the materials for the fields.  Three types of synthetic turf and natural grass are all being considered.  That study should be completed this fall, and it will be reviewed by the Sustainability Commission.  We are also preparing a series of permitting documents and initiating the wetland delineation for the park.  Updates to the website will be much less frequent than they were during the public outreach process.
